Updated Mar 28, 2026Kansas City International Airport has not experienced TSA delays during the partial government shutdown because it uses VMD Corp, a private aviation security contractor, through the TSA Screening Partnership Program since 2002. Unlike federal TSA employees at other airports, MCI's screeners continue to be paid.
Kansas City International Airport's terminal was fully evacuated on March 8, 2026 following a reported bomb threat. Law enforcement conducted sweeps with K-9 units, causing inbound and outbound flight delays nationwide. The threat was later determined not credible and operations resumed after approximately two hours.
Southwest Airlines inaugurated new nonstop service between Kansas City International Airport and Punta Cana International Airport on March 7, 2026, with once-weekly Saturday flights. The service provides travelers easy access to one of the top destinations in the Dominican Republic.
